| Our cat's with Max our Yorkie |
I am often asked " will my new Yorkie Puppy get along with my cat?"
When I am asked this I try to find out as much information I can to help determine if adding a new Yorkie Puppy to your home with a cat will possibly work.
There is no way to make this a Yes or No answer to this questions because each situation is different just as each puppy and cat is different.
I might ask:
Is your cat a male or a female?
I find that a male cat is a bit more resistant to a new bouncy playful puppy.
Is your cat neutered or spayed?
A un-neutered or un-spayed cat can have the hormone rush to make it a bit resistant to a new Yorkie puppy. It is best to have any pet spayed or neutered for their overall mental and physical health.
How old is your cat?
Let's face it, age influences just home any person or animal might react to the youthful activity of a Yorkie Puppy. The older the cat is the less forgiving it may be of the bouncy playful puppy that is eagerly trying to play with it's new "friend"
Is your cat de-clawed?
I ask this because it is important to the safety of the puppy and the cat. The cat is the current ruler of the animal's in the house and if it is a dominate cat it will want to set the stage for he or she being the boss. The cat might want to tap or pat the puppy to show the puppy that it has to behave the way the cats wants. If the cat has claws it can hurt the puppy by scratching them. If the cat has rear and front claws it could injure the puppy by clawing at the puppy to the paint of causing great harm to the puppy. I won't place a puppy in harms way so this is a very important thing to determine before I let a puppy enter this potential cat home.
Tell me about your cat's personality?
This lets me find out if that cat is a fearful or bold personality cat or is it very easy going? A temperamental cat isn't going to be receptive to a new Yorkie puppy? If a cat is a cranky cat that resists interaction with humans or other animals then it wont be fair to the cat to force it to endure the playful puppy.
These are just some of the questions that I ask in this situation.
Do you know some of the other questions I might ask? Go ahead and email me what you think as some of the other questions I ask in this particular situation. at:

We are at the bedside of Savanna very often to make sure the tiny female is able to nurse. So far she is attaching and seems ot be able to content with her siblings that are twice her size.
